Since 1975, Buku has catered to the artistic, political and community needs of the culturally strong Yolngu people of Yirrkala and more than twenty outstations in Northeast Arnhem Land. The centre boasts three gallery spaces, a printmaker’s workshop and a large museum (including the historic Yirrkala Church Panels). Local artists have top reputations for magnificent and awardwinning bark paintings and ochred memorial poles, wood carvings, limited edition works on paper and yidaki (didgeridoos). The Lonely Planet Guide says visitors ‘should not miss’ this ‘major’ Centre. Visitors are welcome - no permit required. Daily flights arrive at Gove airport from Cairns and Darwin and accommodation is available in nearby Nhulunbuy. Monday – Friday 8am – 4.30pm, Saturday 9am – 12pm
